I think that the restoration of altar rails also helps to rertose the sense of 'sacred place' to the sanctuary and helps the faithful to contemplate the sacred mysteries both within and outside of Mass, whatever the rite celebrated. There is something deficient and unsettling about churches in which the sanctuary is open and continuous, or almost continuous with the nave, or in which the tabernacle isn't on the high altar, or the most central place, or there is no sanctuary light. If there is a genuine impediment, that's one thing, but to choose to plan a church this way is something else entirely. I also wish they'd relocate the font from the sanctuary.I think that the up and coming 'bird flu' pandemic will afford the greatest opportunity for change regarding practices such as Communion under both kinds, in the hand etc, along with the delivery of essential catechesis on holy Communion and the doctrine of concomitance. I hope our parishes are prepared for this. The Church has been given a truly exceptional moment of Grace with this pope in these times. Please pray and do what you can to ensure that, if it is God's will, he release his motu proprio this month. It is Saint Edmund Campion's feast day on December 1 - he would be another excellent intercessor for the Holy Father during the days that he is in Turkey.I think that more than at any other time in the last 40 years, or even the past 400 years, now is the time to fast and pray with great single-mindedness. Given your fairly wide readership, can't you start, and guide us through, a novena to our Lady of Fatima to protect him in Turkey, while there is still time.
